Illegal immigrants are coming into Texas, but not from where one might think. The rush is coming from Arizona, Oklahoma and other states — places that have recently passed tough new anti-illegal immigrant laws.
Is anyone surprised by this? It’s a very, very simple and time-tested formula:
law enforcement + reduced incentive = reduction in illegal activity
Are you listening, lawmakers? Are you listening mayors and governors across America? Are you listening, presidential candidates? After all, as president, part of your job is to be the top law-enforcement official. As a matter of principle, amnesty for illegal immigrants is not an option. (Are you listening John McCain?) The solution is simple: enforce the laws of the land. It is, after all, your job.

Under the headline “Bicyclist tased when he runs for minor infraction” we find this gem:
A man riding a bicycle with improper lighting equipment was shot with a Taser stun gun Wednesday night as he ran from a deputy who tried to stop him for the infraction.
After repeated attempts, Glenn County sheriff’s deputy Cale Smith said he finally got the attention of the rider on Sierra Street, who jumped from the bike and began running.
After a half-block chase and several warnings from Smith that he would use the Taser, he did.
So this looks like another “bad cop using their Taser excessively” story. Until you get to the last paragraph:
Rivera was transported to Glenn Medical Center, where he was cleared for booking into the Glenn County Jail on suspicion of resisting arrest, riding a bicycle without proper lighting, riding under the influence of alcohol and use of false citizenship/government documents. [emphasis added]
So in other words he was an illegal immigrant? Which explains why he was running from the police in the first place: he was afraid of getting caught. The problem is that illegal immigrants already broke the law once to get into this country, and many continue to break the law once they get here, regardless if it’s using false citizenship documents, resisting arrest, or in some cases, murder.
This is yet another example of the media trying to paint a picture that is misrepresentative of reality. Why did they fail to mention that Mr. Rivera was an illegal immigrant? Why did they bury the details of his arrest until the last paragraph, then only mention “use of false documents” as one of the charges against him, failing in the preceding paragraphs to note the fact that he is, in fact, an illegal immigrant? Why not call a spade a spade?
What you need to do: When you catch media outlets pandering such slanted journalism, call them on it. Write to the editor. If you have a subscription, cancel it and tell them why. Vote with your wallet, and perhaps they’ll get the message.
