First, it came out that Obama’s nominee (since confirmed) for Secretary of Treasury, Timothy Geithner, was found to be knowingly delinquent in back taxes. He said it was unintentional because he “wasn’t aware” he had to pay taxes on his payroll check from the International Monetary Fund. Nevermind that he had to sign a form stating he was informed that made aware that he was responsible to pay said taxes.
Then, Tom Daschle, Obama’s nominee for Secretary of Health & Human Services, was found to also be delinquent in paying his taxes. He said it was unintentional because he “wasn’t aware” he had to pay taxes on the car and driver provided to him as a gift from a friend.
Now, Nancy Killefer has been found to have some tax problems as well. She was the Obama administration’s nominee for either Deputy Director for management at the Office of Management and Budget, or for a new White House post created by the Obama administration, “Chief Performance Office of the U.S. Government.” After it came out that she had failed to pay a year and a half of employment taxes on household help, she withdrew her nomination. It hasn’t been made clear if she was “aware” or not that she was responsible for paying these taxes.
Is the new requirement for high public office to be a tax cheat?
